Farrier - Working With Horses

What is a Farrier? If you are searching horse careers, this is just one of the many horse jobs available. A Farrier is someone that works directly with horses and their main job role is in the preparation or treatment of the horse’s foot, leg, and hoof. In this horse job you are responsible for cleaning and filing away excess growth off the hoof to ensure the horse is balanced. Choosing the correct shoe for the horse relies on the size of the horse, its foot condition and what the horse is being used for. Next the Farrier has to adjust the shape of the shoe and affix to the horse correctly.

If you want a career in horses, particularly as a Farrier, you cannot just start working as one; you must attend one of the many schools that offer the appropriate course. After completing the Farrier course, the next ideal step is to get an apprenticeship and work hands on with the horse as well as an experienced Farrier. Another thing you need to think about if you want a career in the horse industry is, are happy working with horse’s everyday and confident in handling them. Some horses can be fussy and do not like their feet being handled. You also need to have good manual skills when it comes to being a Farrier.

Farrier’s are generally self employed, so a lot of travelling to different sites will be involved. This also can mean your hours will not be Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. The job of a Farrier can be a very labour intensive and you must at all times put the horse’s welfare first.

So if you have chosen being a Farrier as career in the horse industry, make sure you get the qualifications, do it well, be friendly to customers and you will go far. So if you enjoying working with horses, a career as a Farrier is a good option.
