I am chilean and english, I enjoy my job and love working with horses, since I was 14 years when I started my first mare. Horses are the center of my life, after my family, and have a very good talent for connecting riders with their horses. I am generous and patient when I teach and show my work and how anyone, given the right guiding, can train his own horse. I am a professional horse trainer and I have worked in many farms in Patagonia, starting colts for show jumping colts, Criollo for the national rodeo circuit, Paso Peruano and arabs for endurance racing. Comment: Thank you Paul for being our guide over five great days and for providing such an incredible riding and learning experience while we were in Chile. The whole trip was wonderful and I was so happy to have been given the opportunity to ride Leon, using a bitless bridle. He was completely responsive and at no time was I worried that he would take off, or be out of control. He reacted well, more consistently than other horses that I have ridden, using a bridle with a bit. It leaves me wondering, and rather sad that these bridles are not more widely used. In addition to this, I was thrilled to have ridden using a simple cordeo around his shoulders. Leon certainly seemed content and I know that I was. Horse jobs are for those that "live and breathe" the equine. Those who don't "live and breathe" horses, are far less likely to be found in the company of these amazing creatures. Far beyond the needs of horse racing (although it still plays the role of dominant force), the equine industry is bleeding with thousands of horse jobs from blacksmith to trackwork rider.
There is no simple answer as to how to get work in the equine industry - a horse job - but a degree such as a diploma of equine science is a good start. In contrast to this, if you're looking for a hands-on job, such as a trackwork rider or farrier, then experience in the field is often far more valuable than the education behind it. All you really are required to obtain is a keen interest and love of all things horses.
Although most horse jobs require practical education and training - potentially even from a higher education center such as a university - it can be of particular incentive for your employer if you have some experience physically working with the horses. Whether it's in the exact role you're attempting to enter or not, many people have found that simply working at filling any horse job will assist in the obtaining of more specified horse jobs.
For instance, if you're going for a job as a horse trainer, it couldn't hurt to have been an assistant trainer or even a foreman for a few years. If you've got no experience at all, we can recommend just getting out there and trying to find some weekend work mucking stables or washing horses down - best case scenario, often potential employees are found through volunteer channels, so it can potentially prove to be very valuable experience indeed!
The internet is today one of the best sources of information on equine employment. You can use search engines to look up equine jobs in your locality, or surrounding areas. In addition to various job listing websites such as "monster.com", you should consider looking for equine employment in general equine sites.
